Backyard Beekeeping Q&A 263 June 21st
Welcome to backyard beekeeping topics.
This week Summer begins and the heat is on.
If you'd like to submit your own topic for consideration, please follow this link: www.fredsfinefowl.com/thewaytobee.html
This entire series is available as a PodCast:
www.fredsfinefowl.com/podcastthewaytobee.html
These are today's questions:
1) I am out of space for nucleus hives, what's the best way to combine with 10 frame hive bodies?
2) My horizontal hive is full, and there is a lot of bearding going on. Any ideas on what I may need to do?
3) We discovered a bee with deformed wings (Suspect DWV), we treated for mites. What should we do about it?
4) I would like to have a resource hive, why can't I just use a single 10 frame deep Langstroth for that?
5) I'm wondering what I may have done wrong that my bees are not using the BetterComb from Betterbee? Any suggestions?
That's it for today!
I invite you to join the discussion at: groups/3062274013832702/

    I may have messed up or did something good. I came up with like a VIN number that tells me where I got the bees, county, part of county, year and a few more things. I then generate a QR code for that info and laser engrave the hive...not gonna work to well when that hive goes elsewhere.

    I wonder what i did wrong... I bought one already-built betterbee bettercomb frame and replaced a plastic foundation-frame that was not built-out yet in my very first colony. I put it in "slot 4" near the center of the box. Two weeks later my bees had built out the frames around the bettercomb, but no nectar, pollen or brood in the bettercomb. zero. I was hoping I'd have brood - but no cigar. Any suggestions?

      I loved the video - it was really great to see some details about catching swarms. I wish I'd had similar results with the BetterComb.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn День тому

      You're just going to have to wait it out I'm afraid. The more they use it, the more it will smell right until they begin to put eggs in those cells. Depends on the season, colony status, and many other variables. I've had swarms use it within a couple of days for brood, but that may not be the norm.

    I have carpenter bees chewing out the insulation in the lid of my 20- frame Layens horizontal. I don’t see them on the comb. I was told to put a pan under each hive stand leg and put motor oil in the pan. Do you know what oil is best? Will cooking oil rot the stand legs? Would linseed oil be OK? DE washes away with each rain and my hive is in another location. Thank you for your always helpful information.

    Hi Fred, Do you have a problem with deer eating your sunflowers and other plants. We live in Cleveland and the deer are eating our sunflowers and other plants that are supposed to be deer resistant. We don't have any voles so our hyssop is safe. The deer don't bother it.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn 3 дні тому

      Yes, deer cleaned out 2 acres of sunflowers last year, one doe and two fawns moved in until there was nothing left. This year, I use Deer Repellent... stinky spray. It's working for deer so far. Voles are apparently unstoppable.
